I’ve been quite surprised at how similar some of the thoughts are in rural Myanmar to those held by many people at home in my village in England.

The head monk of R.E.C wanted us to visit his native village and meet all of their very big family! My other student had a slight cold coming, but the monk was determined that we would undertake the 5 hour boat journey and like it! At 5 am I grabbed my scant belonging, had some breakfast, and we set off in the boat.
It is 11am; I have visited a pagoda, swum in the sea, met 5 of the REC teachers and eaten a fish on a stick. A BBQ fish I might add.
It took 17 hours. We left Yangon at 5:30 pm when the traffic was heavy and the light was dimming. The traffic was not the only heavy thing as the head monk of the monastery where I have been teaching cranked up the radio to what sounded a lot like Burmese metal music!
Today I have been in Myanmar for exactly 4 months. I use the bus five days a week, twice a day. The very first bus I caught was ten days after my arrival in my second ever Asian country. The first being a brief time in Thailand.
Today was a treat for Myanmar government teachers. They had the day off of school on account of it being a full moon day. The teachers have to make up the missed day on the following Saturday, so it’s not completely playing truant, but it did mean that I was able to spend a day off duty with the wonderful group of ladies that I have been training.
We arrived in Minbya, Rakhine State on Friday at around 3 pm after an hour and a half car journey across flat land. We had a family in the taxi with us. A young daughter and man sat in the back while the lady sat next to Van. Van closed her eyes 90% of the way. It was bumpy and so hot.
